VOICE OVER

::GO STRAIGHT TO THE DEMOS::

I began doing commercial voice work in 1991…THOSE were the days! Not only was it an enjoyable way to make a dollar, there were plenty of dollars to be made. Unfortunately, things have changed over the years…

My first job was kind of an accident born of tragedy. A well-known voice talent had a heart attack while in a production house doing some retail tv/radio spots. I knew a guy at a talent agency and he called in a panic asking “Can you impersonate this guy?” I could, so I did and that temporary fill-in job lasted eight years!

Cheap, largely Chinese-made electronics became abundantly available in the U.S. and suddenly, anyone and everyone that had ever been told by someone that lived next door to someone that once knew a guy that had a house near a recording studio decided to go into voice over work. Setting up a home studio was so inexpensive that pretty much everyone could do it. this created a group of humans that I lovingly refer to as “voice whores“.

What WAS a $250.00 job for me was now being done by the voice whores for as little as $5.00 (YES, That is FIVE DOLLARS!). They made it pretty much impossible for those of us that did this work to continue to do it as a means of making a living, paying bills, feeding our kids and keeping the lights on. Needless to say, if you are looking for a $5.00 commercial voice over, I am not your guy! I may not work as much these days, but I work with dignity.
